2009 European League: Women (Edinburgh)
Great Britain 0 Romania 3 (17-25 13-25 21-25)
Romania celebrated a double victory over Great Britain in Edinburgh, this time in straight sets 25-17 25-13 25-21 to improve their chances of reaching the Final Four.
Head coach Bogdan Paul had stressed to his players that every set dropped could prove significant if they are to qualify for the Final Four and they responded.
It was a dominant display against a GB team who could not scale the heights of Saturday when they made Romania battle for every point. There was a positive start from the home side with captain Lynne Beattie giving her side the lead for the first time in the match at 5-4 with a crosscourt hit.
But Romania hit back strongly and a reverse set from Sabina Miclea-Grigortu set up Nneka Onyejekwe to put her side 8-6 ahead at the first technical time-out.
Two solid blocks be Elena Zaharia on firstly Janine Sandell and then Nichola Osborne extended Romania's lead to three points and some great defence put Romania 15-11 up and forced GB coach Audrey Cooper into her first time-out.
Daiana Muresan put the GB first pass under pressure with some terrific serving before Beattie hit back with a spike into the far corner of the court.
But it was only a temporary reprieve. Alina Albu and Muresan pilled on the pressure under some imaginative setting from Miclea-Grigoruta to take the score to 19-13Romania consistently found the gaps in the GB defence to lead 22-14 before a big block from Lizzie Reid gave GB some respite.
Romela Trica gave Romania set point with a tip over the block and the same player came up with the decisive block on the next point to give Romania the set 25-17.
Romania kept up the pressure at the start of the second set but GB did not help themselves with a number of unforced errors in reception as they fell behind 3-8.
Muresan and Irina Radu hit consistently well and, while Janine Sandell and Beattie had their moments, they were few and far between. At 10-15, coach Cooper was obliged to take another time-out but Romania continued to move the GB block around and the hitting weight of Muresan troubled them throughout the match.
Another well-placed spike from Radu put Romania 18-11 up and then Albu wiped one off the block to give her side an eight-point lead. Jennifer Taylor hit tamely into the net to bring up set point for Romania and it was another reception error that gave them the set 25-13.
GB competed better at the start of the third set and Sandell found a way through the block to tie the scores at 7-7. But Romania held the lead at the technical time-out after Sandell hit into the net.
Some alert play at the net by Lizzie Reid pulled it back to 10-10 to prompt coach Paul to take a time-out.
Reid had more success through the middle to make it 12-10 but Radu hit back powerfully for Romania.
A block on Beattie by Miclea-Grigortu brought Romania level 14-14 and they led 16-15 a the second technical time-out.
Beattie was having more success with finding a way past the Romanian block but the closest GB managed to get was one point at 19-20.
A hitting error from Rachel Bragg gave Romania a 22-19 lead and put them back in control of the set.
Albu hit off the block to give Romania match point and Muresan served for the match 25-21.
Romania coach Bogdan Paul was happier with the way his team played: "It was much better than yesterday. It is very clear in modern volleyball that it is a battle between service and reception.
"We served much better than yesterday and also received much better and that was the big difference.
"There was a point in the third set where we lost concentration but we sorted it out and I was pleased about that."
Captain Claudia Gavrilescu added: "It was much easier than yesterday.
The players were more used to the hall and how our opponent played and it was better from us."
Coach Cooper admitted: "The passing errors started to play with our heads and we backed away a little bit. We need to show better mental toughness.
"I don't think their service was any tougher than it was in previous matches against them but we did not deal with it as well."
Captain Lynne Beattie said: "It was very disappointing after how we played yesterday. We thought we could bring much more to the game but we made too many errors.
"The crowd were great and it was up to the players to produce but it didn't happen."
