Women's Power League

Home / National Teams / Women's Power League

Scotland’s female players gathered in Airdrie Academy on Sunday 30th of November for their second Power League of the season. Despite very cold playing conditions, there was impressive play in all three matches.

Tom Rooney coached Team Alba whilst Dave McEwan coached Team Caledonia.

Power LeagueFirst to play were the Scottish Juniors against Alba. This match saw the Scottish Juniors start very positively. They competed well, gaining points and experience as they prepared for their friendly internationals in a few weeks time. Coaching staff took advantage of the technical timeouts to give their teams advice and encouragement. However the experienced hitters from Team Alba, particularly Jill Runciman and Gillian Watson killed many of the balls they received from setter Elaine Krawczyk and this proved too strong for the Juniors’ defence. Team Alba had to play strategically to prevent being blocked by the Scottish Juniors but went on to win the match 3-0 (25–14, 25–17 and 25–16).

Power LeagueIn the second match the Scottish Juniors faced Team Caledonia. Setter Aileen Hall started the game with powerful serving which gave Team Caledonia an early lead. Powerful attacking from Emma Pell and Laura McReady ensured Team Caledonia won the first set 25-10. The Scottish Juniors made many changes to their original line up, trying to give players court time before their Christmas matches. Team Caledonia used more tactical play during the second and third sets in the form of middle attackers Hazel Gow and Chrissie Mahon. Claire Penny also changed tact at the outside of the net during the third set to trouble the Juniors’ defence. Caledonia went on to win this match 3-0 ( 25-10, 25–11 and 25–5).

The last match of the day saw both senior teams playing against each other. This was a four set battle that Team Caledonia won 3 – 1 (25-18, 21–25, 25–20 and 25–14).
