Grade 4 Referee

This is a single day course, although course literature will be issued in advance and candidates are expected to be familiar with the FIVB Rules of the Game prior to attending a course.

The SVA Referees Commission will organise one course before the start of each season around the end of September beginning of October.

Alternatively Clubs may organise a course during one of the free weekends in the SVA calendar. A minimum of 16 candidates will be required to run these courses. Alternatively, the course may be run with 10 candidates and 6 players to assist with game situations.

The organising club will be responsible for hall lets and in return will be allocated 4 free places if the course has a minimum of 16 paying participants.

The course starts with an test to evaluate how well candidates have familiarised themselves with the Rules of the game and then moves on to look in detail at key rules or rules that caused issues in the written test. Candidates will also practice refereeing and be taught key techniques and behaviours. The pass mark for the test is 80%.

At the end of this course, successful candidates will be qualified to referee matches in the lower Divisions of the National League. Successful candidates will receive a referee’s license for the season, SVA referee badge and misconduct cards.
