Scottish Ambassadors - Mark McGivern
I first started playing volleyball in 5th year at high school. I started because my PE teachers held a lunch time club and I was interested in giving volleyball a chance. I enjoyed it so much that I went every lunch time and I was quickly hooked. The school then set up a team which played in a few school competitions. We also played in a local club competition once a month on a Friday evening.
The friendly tournament was run by Colin McGinlay from Team Fife VC. He asked me if I was interested in training with his club once a week and from that moment on I was part of team fife volleyball club. For me I was great to feel part of a team and being with a new group of friends. Not long after I started training with Team Fife I was playing with their second team in the 3rd division. I can remember looking over to the other court and seeing the first team training and thinki
ng I wanted to be there. That was my first inspiration and goal. After a season with the second team I had reached my goal and moved into the first team and I was asked to attend Scottish national team training.
I then played with City of Edinburgh for a season. After a season with City of Edinburgh I then played with City of Glasgow Ragazzi for a season. I then relocated to Sheffield to train full-time with the GB team and then moved out to Holland with the GB squad to play as Martinus in the Dutch ‘A’ league. This season I have signed with Omniworld in Holland.
The reason I give my all to volleyball is because I want to play at the highest level and one day play in the Olympics. I want to be part of team GB and compete against the best teams in the world.
I love the sport and there is nothing else I would rather do than play volleyball everyday.
