The West Sands, St Andrews hosted the first of two beach volleyball events this summer with the King & Queen of the Beach on Saturday. The sun shone and brought out huge crowds to the beach to witness the great beach volleyball on display.

The KQOB event is run with pools of 4 (where possible) or 5 and individuals enter, playing with every player in turn against the others, amassing points for themselves along the way. A different format to the usual formats the players are used to.

The women’s event was a hotly contested competition with only 9 points separating the first 3 players. Ulla Barnick just pipped Shelly Paterson by 3 points overall to take the title of Queen of the Beach 2010.

In the men’s competition there were some equally close matches in both pools with Daniel Najdrowski and James Jensen coming out of Pool 1 to contest the final with Colin Paterson and Ionnis Panayiotakis from Pool 2.

The final pool saw Colin Paterson win all his matches and take the title of King of the Beach 2010, with James Jensen the runner-up for the second year running.

Thanks go to all who helped set up and take down equipment, a huge thanks to Mary Cook for keeping the event running so smoothly and to everyone who helped the King and Queen celebrate afterwards!
