Pupils from Queensferry High School had the once in a lifetime opportunity to play Volleyball with some of the best rugby players in the world!
Adidas ambassadors Dan Carter, Mils Miliaina and Kieran Read with Hosea Gear and John Afoa came to our school for the only Scottish launch of the ‘adiStars’ website and to take part in an adiStar challenge…which so happened to be a volleyball challenge!!!
Adistars is an exciting new website for young people where they can undertake individual or team sporting challenges to earn some unique prizes! The site was created by adidas as part of their sponsorship towards the Young Ambassadors of Sport programme to support the awesome work that these young people do to increase physical activity in their schools and communities. Queensferry High was selected for the Scottish launch due to the success of the YA programme since it began as a pilot three years ago and is mentored by their Active School Co-ordinator.
The pupils and staff knew there was a special assembly with ‘guests’, however the identity of the athletes was kept under wraps until they walked in on cue to the assembly hall, where the audience raised the roof! The athletes were interviewed most professionally by our Gold YA Hannah Craig, along with adiStar YA’s Becky Arthur and Jordan Roberts.
Then in keeping with ‘adiStars’, the All Blacks embarked on a Volleyball challenge with 15 school pupils of different ages! They were tasked with spiking the ball over the net from a self-attack to a deep corner target. Limited attempts were allowed followed by a series of drills breaking down the elements of the skill before repeating the task with a view to improving on their original score. Thereafter it was Game On!
The All Blacks were highly competitive while striving to display their power in the task! They were fantastic with the kids, who could not quite believe they were playing in a volleyball team with the best rugby players in the world! Their presence dominated the gym in more ways than one, and with specially invited guests including the Lord and Lady Provost and our very own Chief Executive of Scottish Volleyball looking on, the atmosphere in the gym was simply amazing! If only every school day was as exciting!
