The Scottish Junior Women under 18’s team continue their build up to the SC European Championships in San Marino at Easter when the training squad is split in to two teams to take on high flying senior women’s club side QTS Troon Team Ayrshire in a triangular tournament at Wishaw Sports Centre on Sunday 19th January 2014.
The squad has been busy in the last couple of months firstly with their own club sides facing up to top English Junior side Tameside in both under 18 and under 16 tournaments at Ravenscraig, Lanarkshire at the end of November. Almost 60 top young Scottish player were involved in that event. This was followed by a 2 day camp just prior to Christmas which was in turn followed by a training squad travelling to Manchester for a series of training matches against the Tameside club between Christmas and New Year.
When the squad of 12 was selected in 2012, there were probably only 15 or so truly viable candidates for the 12 places.Thanks to the experience gained by Scotland’s continued involvement in the UK school games and the last European championships many of our young players are now plying their trade at the very top of our women’s game and the international coaches and team manager agree that on this occasion partly because of these factors there are as many as 24 players who are in serious contention for selection for the European’s.
If this group continue to show the ability, application and progress they have done so far then they must be aiming to emulate or supersede their immediate predecessors fabulous performance in winning a silver medal at the last SC European’s in Cyprus 2012.
It will be a truly exciting and demanding couple of months up to and including the championships.
