It has been recommended that beach volleyball is part of the 2022
Commonwealth Games.
Beach volleyball has moved closer to starring at a major games in the UK again, after it was confirmed that the sport has been put forward for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
With the Commonwealth Games only able to include a limited number of sports, the Birmingham 2022 committee today confirmed it has recommended that beach volleyball is part of the 2022 Games. The confirmation of the inclusion of beach volleyball now relies on the final stage of the selection process, which will see the Commonwealth members vote to formally ratify the decision.
The news comes after a sustained campaign by a group from the volleyball community, who lobbied to see the sport included.
Thousands of people will descend on the country’s second city for the Games which promises to be one of the highlights of the summer of 2022. Scottish Volleyball CEO Margaret Ann Fleming is excited that beach volleyball could be part of it. “The SVA have worked really hard alongside British Volleyball & Volleyball England to securethis fantastic news. Beach volleyball made its debut at a Commonwealth Games last year on Australia’s Gold Coast and Lynne Beattie/Melissa Coutts and Robin Miedzbrodzki/Seain Cook earned the honour of being the first pairs to represent Scotland on the sand at a Commonwealth Games. It’s now hoped that beach volleyball will get the final confirmation to appear at a second consecutive Games.
“Beach Volleyball was an enormous success in the Gold Coast in 2018,” says Richard Callicott, President of the British Volleyball Federation. “I am delighted with Birmingham’s decision to recommend that beach volleyball should feature in the Games.”
