St Andrews Beach Volleyball Club ran the final event of the Scottish Beach Volleyball Tour on the West Sands, St Andrews on a sunny, but windy day. The wind meant that control would be a major factor in determining the King and Queen of the Beach and the players set about their initial matches in overcast conditions. The sun came out quickly, however, and stayed with the event for the remainder of the day.

The initial pools of the men’s competition provided some interesting results, including an in form Stuart Parker winning all his matches playing with and against some very experienced beach players in Konrad Krawczyk, Kenny Moretta and Iain Cook.

James Jensen
The men’s semi-finals provided some of the best play of the day, with Parker being joined in the final pool by Graham Riddle, James Jensen and Konrad Krawczyk. Before the last match in the final, Jensen had built up a lead by winning with both Riddle and Krawczyk. Riddle and Krawczyk took the final match 21-11, however, which meant that  Jensen took a very creditable second place, with Riddle taking the title of King of the Beach 2009, and with it the overall Scottish Tour title.

Graham Riddle

In the women’s event it all came down to the final match, with Eilidh Smith trailing her regular beach partner Mel Coutts by just 2 points. Coutts, playing with Claire Penny in the final match, narrowly won this 15-13 and with it the Queen of the Beach 2009 title. Smith and Coutts jointly took the overall Scottish Tour title.

My thanks go out to all those who helped make this a fantastic season, event organisers and helpers who gave up their own time to help put on some great tournaments.

See you next summer!
