NUVOC Open Beach Volleyball Championships - Portobello June 2016The NUVOC Open: Portobello Beach Volleyball Championships (18 June) was a great success posting the highest numbers seen at a Scottish Beach Tour event ever. 144 players taking to the sand on the Saturday spread over 20 courts – nearly a half mile of beach volleyball courts offering a great spectacle to over 4000 members of the public– (previous highest was 96 players for 2v2, Portobello 2006). Numbers wise we had an increase of 82 players (132%) on 2015 where there were 62 playing (31 teams) – simply put - 41 more teams took part this year than they did last year. 41!

beach volleyball flying ninja death strikePersonally delighted with the number of junior players who took part - 34 junior teams registered in advance including those from Aberdeen, Perth & Kinross and Edinburgh. Great to see and the beach looked spectacular.

It was a tremendous draw all round – senior men division one, with 22 teams, got underway with 5 pools offering many new pairings the chance to find their sand legs – they did. Throughout the day some great talent was on show and new mens pairing of Ross McKelvie & Stewart Caldwell battled their way to their first beach final. Waiting for them, tour vets, Colin Paterson & Jack McKeown. The young pups won the day as the energy sapping sand had taken its toll on the vets. Caldwell & McKelvie notch up their first tour win. More to come from these guys.

The final found the Harrison twins (Ronan & Sean) compete with beach novice Janahan Balasubramaniam and his partner Jaroslav Tomik. The city of Edinburgh twins found their rhythm early doors and eventually won the hard fought final. Great effort from all the teams in Division 2 and looks good for the future.

Women’s division rolled out some great matches with all players chasing down every point as if it were match. An interesting final between new pairing Patricia Garcia & Lina Dzemydaite against Sylwia Marcinska & Sharon Versteeg. A cosmopolitan clash by all accounts with strong serving and clever attacking winning the day for Patricia Garcia & Lina Dzemydaite.

It was a great family affair with mums & dads, aunties & uncles, brothers & sisters, all down supporting their stars. Great friendships were forged on and off the courts and at some point victors had to be determined.

The experienced beach pairing Harris Richie & Logan Darling beat a very energetic Sean Platts Stobie & Cameron Hardman to claim the spoils in the U18 men.

Patrick Stenhouse & Haydon Campbell took the spoils in the U16 men when they pipped Markus Kan & Euan Fraser for gold in the final.

In the U18 girls, Emma Waldie & Jennifer Lee delivered the goods against Asia Purdie & Kirsty MacIver and in the U16 girls Aberdeen Grammars Karolina Wroblewska & Kate Renforth beat Megan Hall & Ellie Stewart.

A great day had by all. Special thanks to all those who played their hearts out – I hope you enjoyed yourselves. For me, it was fantastic to see so many courts on the beach. What a great advert for beach volleyball in Scotland – long may it continue.
