Double Recognition for Adam Paton by the University of Glasgow

Adam Paton has been recognised for his work for Volleyball and Sport as a whole at the University of Glasgow over the past two academic years, receiving the Club Development Award by Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA). The award recognises those who go above and beyond their role with the club and help develop their club and sport at University and local and national level. After playing for the Men’s 1st team in 2019-20, Adam served as Secretary and Covid-19 Officer for Glasgow University Volleyball Club (GUVC), and was the Vice-Captain of one of the Glasgow University Intramural Sports League teams.

Glasgow University Sports Association President Shereif Kholeif recognised Adam’s work refereeing and assisting with coaching in 2019-20 and his work in 2020-21 supporting GUVC, GUSA, and UofG Sport with Covid-19 guidance for volleyball and supporting Scottish Volleyball with his work on Special Events. Adam was also recognised for their constant drive and innovation to get volleyball back in whatever manner was safe and possible. In the summer, Adam helped GUVC take advantage of Scottish Volleyball’s Pop Up and Play fund to buy two new outdoor nets and 12 beach balls. This allowed GUVC to lead some outdoor training sessions and take part in the inaugural Glasgow University Intramural Sports leagues. Volleyball was the most subscribed sport and saw 81 players take part in the four weeks before Covid-19 restrictions meant that the competition could no longer take place.

Adam Paton was further recognised at the end of the Virtual Awards through being awarded his full Colours for services to the Volleyball Club and sport at Glasgow University as a whole. For the award of a colour, the nominee must have demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment to the club including supporting growth and development, officiating and coaching, going over and above the expected communication with the club’s National Governing Body in order to support a wider campaign to increase the development of the sport in Scotland, and working on community and alumni engagement. Adam sadly won’t be playing in BUCS next year nor sitting on the GUVC Committee as he spends his Year Abroad working in Austria, but all at GUVC and GUSA look forward to his help and experience when he returns in 2022.

Scottish Volleyball are very proud of our Special Events Commission President and for his great achievements. We wish him best of luck for his future endeavours.  His work ethic, passion and leadership have certainly shone his role as SEC President and he is a pleasure to work with.
