Eask Kilbride serves up another winner

East Kilbride FestivalOn Thursday the 29th of October, Active schools co-ordinators in East Kilbride held a mini volleyball festival at the Alistair McCoist Complex. The festival saw 3 local primary schools, 100 children come to the festival to enjoy a day of volleyball fun.

The festival was split; in the morning the children would practice the skills needed to play a 2v2 game of volleyball and in the afternoon the schools were split into groups to play matches. The coaching clinic was lead by Andy Fleming, active schools co-ordinator and supported by other members of EK Active schools, sports development and volunteers.

The morning sessions went very well with the children getting the chance to practice a lot of the skills in volleyball, including the volley, dig, serve and the morning finished with spiking. With all of the mornings hard work completed the coaches had a well earned break for lunch. When they came back into the hall they were met by a fantastic cheer and the energy and enthusiasm from the group was amazing. The afternoon was all set to go and level of play was truly outstanding.

Sandra Grubb, club and participation development manager of the Scottish Volleyball Association attended to see the efforts of the school children and to lend her support on the day. She felt that the day had been excellent and encouraged the children to continue to play volleyball.

The day came to an end with the EK active schools team promoting the new junior community volleyball club that they have recently started. The club runs in the AMC complex every Thursday night between 5.30pm and 7pm. The club is open to children in primary 6- secondary 4.

The whole day was a great success and big thanks need to go to all who helped on the day; the active schools team, Sports development at South Lanarkshire Leisure, staff at the AMC, the teachers and parents, the volunteers and of course the children themselves.
