Mark McGivern (boys)Ravenscraig –Friday 27th Oct
Teams from Belmont Academy, Kyle Academy, Woodfarm High School, Dalziel High School, East Bank Academy, Girvan Academy, Greenfaulds High School, Carrick Academy and Belmont House joined us at the fantastic three court hall at Ravenscraig in Motherwell on Friday 27th of October for a jam packed 17 team tournament. Teams played matches across the day with three pools in action in the morning and then three pools in action again in the afternoon. With lots of new additions to the student and teacher experience we also launched our ‘Teachers Learning Zone’. The 30 minute session for teachers between morning and afternoon pool play was greatly received by the teaching staff. Focusing on coaching cues and the organisation/utilisation of a butterfly drill.

Mark McGivern (girls)Ravenscraig – Friday 3rd Nov
On Friday the 3rd of November it was the turn of the girls to compete for the Mark McGivern S4/5/6 Festival 2017 title. The day did not disappoint with a record 15 teams battling to become champion. Across the morning teams were hard to separate and the theme continued in tothe afternoon with close fought games from all 15 teams in the three pools. The event provided the stage for our second teachers learning zone which focused on the technical aspects of the serve, serve reception and a drill for serve and
serve reception. All teachers got involved and students joined the session to bring the final drill to life. All of the work within the teachers learning zone will be made available to the teachers with the aim of supporting learning on the curriculum.

North (boys & girls)Aberdeen Sports Village Thursday 2nd Nov
It was an early start for the SVA staff on the 2nd of November but more than worth it to see the Aberdeen Sports Village brought to life with 20 teams across the S4/5/6 boys and girls. All three courts were in constant action from 0900-1500 with boys and girls matches threading seamlessly throughout the day. It came down to matches between Queensferry High School and Aberdeen Grammar in both the boys and girls competition to decide the winners. Both title battles brought out strong performances from the teams but saw Aberdeen Grammar crowned boys and girls Champions.

In addition to the volleyball we have also included a photo booth station, ‘Didye’ Ken’ competition around our MACvolley ambassadors and we have been lucky to have National team athletes come to the festivals. Our ‘Captain’s Challenge’ has been well received and add’s another dimension to the engagement of the students and schools at our events.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our hosts from Ravenscraig Sports Centre and Aberdeen Sports Village who have played a huge part in the smooth running of our events in their world class facilities.

Please stay tuned for further festival updates from Napier University and the John Wright Sports Centre before Christmas.
