Student Volleyball on the Rise

There is a real sense of anticipation amongst the student volleyball community with the start of the new British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues on Sunday 7th October, following the annual influx of new faces and players at the start of the new academic year.

Edinburgh University women’s 1st team lead the way in the BUCS Premier League (North), being Scotland’s only representative at the top level of student competition this season.  Even with what looks to be a strengthened team, Edinburgh will face formidable opposition in the shape of perennial BUCS Finalists, Northumbria and Durham.

In women’s Tier 1, reigning champions St Andrews will start the season as favourites to retain their title, although Glasgow and Aberdeen will fancy their chances of running them close.  While the ten team women’s Tier 2 should be an interesting competition, with a number of institutions likely to challenge for one promotion spot come the end of the season.

In men’s Tier 1, the teams look relatively evenly matched, with last season’s unbeaten tier 2 champions, Aberdeen, something of an unknown quantity.  Men’s Tier 2 will, like the women’s competition, involve ten teams and the first couple of week’s competition should give an indication of which of those teams to watch for promotion.

With 32 teams competing within the student leagues this season and an average club membership of 54, student volleyball looks to be in a very healthy state for the 18/19 season.
