YS Women Annual Trip to Tameside

On the morning of the 28th December 2018, 23 young Scotland players headed south to visit the top English junior club Tameside near Manchester. This trip has been a regular feature and a highlight of the preparation for our national junior players for nearly ten years.

The young Scots having been split in to three teams stepped straight off their transport in to a series of very competitive matches against their hosts played on two courts. The day finished with the Tameside and Scotland teams being mixed together for a fun end to a long day.

Day two which started at 9am, once again saw the 3 Scots teams play a series of matches against the 3 Tameside groups. The improvement in the refreshed Scots teams was significant as systems and knowledge of their team mates play were bedded in.

The final game of the day and the trip saw the Scotland u19 team take on the top Tameside girls in an exciting and skilful head to head which saw the teams share the honours in a close fought match.

It is difficult to overestimate what this visit means to young Scottish players. The tremendous experience gained in facing knew talented faces, the bonding with team mates, dealing with tight and demanding timetables,  the building of knew international friendships all is of inestimable value for volleyball in Scotland and for the players as people.

The coaches also gain a greater insight into to the talent pool that is available.23 young players, we believe came back home happy and wiser and more ready to face the international season ahead.

Our thanks go to the magnificent hosting job carried out by head coach Alice at Tameside and all her support staff and for their excellent chilli and stew on offer at lunch time on day two.

My thanks go to our brilliant coaching and management staff of Aileen Hall, Tom Rooney,  Zoe Smith and Lisa Thomson and, of course, to a great group of parents and guardians who continue to give their full support to the Scotland Junior training group and finally, to a superb bunch of players who represented Scotland so well both on and off the court.

The door is always open for new faces to join the training squad. All young players aged 13 to 18 have to do is to contact the SVA offices expressing their interest and Aileen Hall the team manager will get back in touch with an invitation to join future training sessions.
