YS v SSS Tournament Challenge

Continuing on from the Christmas Camp twenty five athletes were invited to compete in the YS Challenge Tournament against the Scottish Student Sports Men’s Volleyball squad.  The event was held in Wishaw Sports Facility on two courts.

The object of the event was to provide the Young Seniors squad with an opportunity to compete in a high level tournament where they would face physical and mental challenges in preparation for international competition.

The format of the event saw each team play 3, best of 5 set matches that offered abundant opportunities for the athletes to show what they were made of – and they did.

The quality of volleyball on display was a delight to watch and very exciting for the spectators.

In the match between YS Team Caledonia and YS Team Ecosse there were some fantastic attacking efforts and resolute defending from both sides with YS Caley taking the first set with a 27 – 25 scoreline.

The second set followed on with Caley charging into a 6 point lead early on.
Ecosse regained their composure in defence and pulled back to level the score at 15 points apiece, however they couldn’t sustain the pressure and Caledonia pulled away to take a 2 sets to zero lead.

Buoyed by their improved performance Ecosse were determined to make a game of it. The 3rd set was a fight from the off with neither team building an extended lead. Ecosse battled away taking their opportunities where they could and with the scores even at 14 each it was Ecosse who stepped up a gear in the serving department to take the set.  A superb performance from the young Ecosse team.

With their tails up Ecosse bounced into a 12-8 lead in the 4th. Some magnificent never-say-die defending and tenacious attacking saw the Red team take the game to a 5th and final set.

Caley rallied for the showdown and charged into a 6 point lead with a blistering display of firepower from which their gutsy opposition couldn’t recover.

Well done Caledonia what a game! The outcomes for the day were achieved and everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Well done all.

The YS squad would like to thank the SSS Mens Squad and their coaches Bill Stobie and Doug Crockart for providing such competitive matches and contributing to the great atmosphere and high calibre of the event.  To the YS coaches Thomas Dowens, Ken Fraser and James Orr and to the officials, referees Albert Jaster, Fynn Donaldson and Ally Reid, and scorers Andrew Hook, Jana Baird and Andrew Mexson, a huge thank you all for your invaluable efforts which made the event a spectacle.
