West Teams Discover their form in Dundee

The John Syer Grand Prix and Scottish Student Cup Finals took place at the
University of Dundee on Sunday 10th February.

The day was always going to be a festival of volleyball but the spectators in
attendance were treated to some thrilling and competitive matches over the course of the day.

The Women's Student Cup Semi Finals commenced the day off with Napier University and University of St Andrews providing a great start to the day while Aberdeen University and University of Edinburgh provided entertainment on Court 2. Napier after taking the first set couldn’t maintain their level allowing St Andrews back into the game to take the match 2-1. Edinburgh had a solid start against Aberdeen and managed to hold onto this control to win the match 2-0.

In the Men's Student Competition, Tier 1 leaders University of Edinburgh took on 2nd placed Strathclyde University while University of St Andrews faced off against University of Glasgow. Strathclyde put in a dominant performance, fuelled by National Team players, powered their way to a 2-0 victory while St Andrews had a see saw performance against Glasgow but managed to take the match 2-1 to make the final.

The Men's John Syer Grand Prix took place between City of Glasgow Ragazzi and City of Edinburgh. The Glasgow team were strong, high, fast and powerful which had a huge effect on the outcome of the game. The match started frantic and the young Edinburgh side pressurised their opposition, but the undefeated Ragazzi team withheld this pressure and countered this to which Edinburgh struggled to receive. The match was dominated at the service line by Ragazzi and a 3-0 score line did not flatter this performance.

The Women's Student Cup Final did not disappoint. University of Edinburgh started strong in the first set and took a commanding lead to the match. St Andrews came back with a whirlwind and their offence started to take shape winning the next 2 sets after some gritty display from both sides. Edinburgh then turned the tide in the 4th set to take the match to a decider. The pressure on both sides was big but both teams controlled their emotions to take this match all the way with a thrilling finale. St Andrews edged the win in what was a great showcase of Women's University Volleyball.

In the Men's Student Cup Final, Strathclyde raced to a 2-0 lead with some strong net play by the Glasgow sides blocking unit. St Andrews came back into the match in the 3rd set upsetting Strathclyde’s momentum to take the match to a 4th set. Errors from Strathclyde had crept in during the previous set and this kept St Andrews in the match but the Glasgow side managed to close out the match 3-1.

The Women's John Syer Grand Prix Final started off in blistering fashion for City of Edinburgh. They were determined, focussed and played smart. Su regrouped in Sets 3 & 4 and put in a very dominant display coupled with smart block defence tactics. The atmosphere was electric and the spectators in attendance were playing every point with the players. Both teams gave their all and had opportunities to take the match, but it was a spectacular comeback from the Glasgow side to win the 5th set 18-16.

A huge thanks has to go to the referees, scorers and linejudges who gave up their time to ensure the players only focussed on their performances. The University of Dundee Volleyball Club were a huge supporter in this event providing the venue, staff and volunteers and we cannot thank them enough.
