Scottish Cup Semi-Finals Day 2019

For the fourth year in a row, Scottish Cup and Scottish Plate semi-finals are being held together, this time at Perth College UHI. With two courts running all day, Semi-Finals Saturday is a day not to be missed, with teams giving it all they’ve got to make it to SVA Cup Finals Weekend.

In the Women’s Cup, there’s an Edinburgh derby between City of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Jets to start off the afternoon. A strong City team, who sit top of the SVL Premier table will face a resurgent Jets team who sat bottom of the league before the split. However, Jets can take some confidence in that they have been the only team other than City of Edinburgh and Su Ragazzi to win the Women’s Scottish Cup in the past 8 years.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh University take on the reigning champions in Su Ragazzi – who are aiming for a triple-triple. University of Edinburgh pushed Su Ragazzi hard in last year’s final, and will be hoping to do one better this year, by beating Su Ragazzi.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Cup, the holders also face a team from Edinburgh University. City of Edinburgh are locked in a close title battle with the team they beat over five sets last year, City of Glasgow Ragazzi. The mix of youth and experience in the City of Edinburgh team, will need to bring all their skill and speed to take on the powerful Edinburgh University team who top BUCS Scottish 1A.

The other semi-final is a West derby between City of Glasgow Ragazzi and South Ayrshire, with City of Glasgow Ragazzi aiming to retake the trophy they won in 2016-17. Meanwhile, South Ayrshire will be pushing as hard as possible to make it back into the Men’s Scottish Cup Final for the first time in three years.

Over in the Plate competition, it’s a rematch from last year to begin the day, with a mix of youth and experience in NUVOC II taking on Mets Vets. Former Scotland setter, Alan Krawczyk will bring a wealth of talent to a match that’s sure to start the day off well. Watch out for the NUVOC II setter, Liam Cairns, who’s been tearing up SVL2 with his monster blocking this season. NUVOC are also four-time winners of the Scottish Plate, but have only made the final once since their last victory in 2003.

At the opposite end of the day, Stirling University are taking on Lenzie, with both teams fighting battles at top and bottom of the table respectively. Coach Ioannis Panayiotakis is making his second successive Semi-Finals Saturday appearance with Stirling Uni, this time with the men. The Stirling team will be hoping to make the final and beat a NUVOC II team who knocked them out of the Plate last year.

And then last but certainly not least, is the Women’s Plate, where Troon CW Vets are aiming to make it three Scottish Women’s Plate final wins in a row. Coach Vince Krawczyk and his athletes will be drawing on all of their experiences to beat the underdogs in Edinburgh Jets II.

Then, bringing the morning session to a close, a third Edinburgh University team – University of Edinburgh II – take on the team with the furthest to travel, Orkney VC. Having received a bye in the previous round, Orkney are the unknown quantity in Saturday’s action, and Edinburgh University II will be looking to draw on all their quality to guarantee at least one Edinburgh University team make the final.

Don’t miss out on the second special event of the year, Semi-Final Saturday, at Perth College UHI on Saturday the 9th March. The last chance to see all the senior Cup Final teams in action before 12th-14th April.
