Volleyball Hits East Kilbride

East Kilbride FestivalFor the second time in a month East Kilbride hosted yet another successful Primary School Volleyball Festival. Following closely on the heels of the Scottish Volleyball Association (SVA) National Festival, the Active Schools Co-ordinators in East Kilbride funded, organised and delivered a new festival for local primary schools. The tournament saw six new schools affiliate to the SVA and brought 150 new P6/7 boys and girls to the sport of Volleyball.

Children from Halfmerke, Greenhills, Mount Cameron, St Leonard’s South Park and St Louise Primaries all took part and thoroughly enjoyed the Active Schools Volleyball Festival. The format saw three schools play in the morning and three in the afternoon. The festivals also had a flavour of the International Children’s Games that will be held in Lanarkshire in 2011. All of the school teams played under the name of a country that has competed in these children’s games in the past.

East Kilbride FestivalThe morning festival opened with some excellent pool play and in the end teams from St Louise managed to win the 1st place trophy with 2nd being claimed by Halfmerke and 3rd place went to South Park. The afternoon saw some more terrific volleyball played with the 1st place and 3rd place trophies going to Mount Cameron while South Park claimed 2nd place. John Orr from the SVA who was assisting with the day’s organisation was called upon to present the trophies as the SVA representative. He felt that the day had been a great success and urged all the children to continue to play volleyball in the future.

This tournament was a great success and was made possible through the generosity of some excellent partners. Firstly big thanks go out to Integrated Children’s services in East Kilbride who awarded the funding. Thanks to the SVA for supporting this new festival, a huge thanks to John Orr whose festival experience was so essential to the smooth running of the day. Thanks to the staff from each school who brought the children along to the festival. Thanks to the staff at the John Wright Sport Centre and finally a massive thanks go to the army of Active Schools Co-ordinators and volunteers who helped make the day such a success.
